Worship (& Curiosity)

"I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
    Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well." –Psalm 139:14

When we practice mindfulness, we cultivate curiosity about our experience. Things that were previously off-limits in our thoughts and feelings can now be approached with openness and humor. When we are curious, we are open to what we find. When we are open to what we find, we cultivate a sense of wonder and worship about the world.

Worship happens in the smallest moments of life, just as much as in an organized fashion. When I become curious about how a flower looks, I slow down enough to examine it, to be amazed at what I see, and to whisper a word of worship in my heart for the Creator of something so incredible. When I become curious about an unpleasant emotion, I slow down enough to experience it, to experience its softening, and to worship the Counselor who walks with me through every difficulty. When I become curious about another person’s experience, I slow down enough to notice them as they are (rather than just through my cognitive filters), to invite God into the space of my curiosity, and to worship the Great I Am in whose image we are each made. Curiosity cultivates worship.

Worship can take place only when we know who we are worshiping, and when we have an understanding of why that Being deserves our praise. So we praise God because we’re paying attention to who He is and what He has done for us. We notice in each moment how he has shown up, exercising curiosity about what He has spread before us. This allows us to praise him wholeheartedly.

And every common bush afire with God;
But only he who sees, takes off his shoes."

- Elizabeth Barrett Browning
“Life is this simple. We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent and the divine is shining through it all the time. This is not just a nice story or a fable. This is true.”

- Thomas Merton
